We are in the golden era for eyebrow transformation. When it comes to eyebrow trends, and the expanding evolution of the artistry of eyebrow shaping, it can be difficult to know which services to add to your own professional arsenal and which to leave to other experts. Whether you are considering broadening your service offerings or need to know how to guide your customers to other experts, it’s important to know the facts.

I’ve enlisted eyebrow masters in their given fields to share insight and clear-up some of the myths associated with the work they provide. When it comes to trends, the further a fad strays from what is innate to a person’s natural features, bone structure and brow alignment, the quicker the trend will fade.

Eyebrow Hair Transplant

Let’s start off with a lesser-known field of eyebrow enhancement: the eyebrow hair transplant. It’s a thing and it’s fascinating. So, what is it? I sat down with Ron Shapiro, MD, of Shapiro Medical Group, Hair Transplantation Clinic, to learn more.

Eyebrow “hair” transplants are similar to scalp hair transplants. With eyebrow hair transplants, you are surgically moving hair in the form of one to two hair follicular grafts from a donor area (usually the occipital scalp) to an eyebrow that needs hair. It can be used in different situations to recreate either a portion or the entire eyebrow.

The follicular grafts are live grafts (like any other organ graft) and contain a tiny amount of skin and intact hairs. These grafts must come from the same person (autograft), so there is no chance of rejection. Other people’s hair cannot be used. If an eyebrow is entirely bald, it takes about 300 to 400 hair grafts to recreate it. It is one of the more complicated hair transplants procedures.

MYTH: Anyone can receive an eyebrow transplant.

FACT: It is excellent for scar repairs or lost eyebrows from trauma, including over-plucking.

It is less valuable to use this as a method to thicken up thinning eyebrows. Not everyone, however, is a good candidate. They must be done right, or they will not look natural. This procedure is good for covering scars. It is not suitable for people with thinning eyebrows, and it is better for patients who have lost their eyebrows from trauma, overplucking, a burn or a cut. It is not suitable for diseases like alopecia areata because the hair would just fall out again.
