Most people can try facial yoga, but those with a facial injury, active acne, eczema or psoriasis should consult with a medical professional first.

Facial yoga has its fair share of skeptics, but some data suggests the exercises do work. In a small 2018 study of women ages 40 to 65, the participants performed 32 facial exercises in 30-minute intervals either day or every other day for 20 weeks. Respondents reported fuller upper and lower cheeks and an age estimate of each participant by a third party decreased significantly.

The article compares facial yoga to resistance training for increasing body strength. Exercising a muscle makes it grow, so in theory, working the muscles of the face should add definition to the cheeks and jawline.

It is recommended to start with one exercise for one minute a day and work up to ten exercises for ten minutes per day, then 20 to 30. If done consistently, results could occur within six to ten weeks.

Facial Yoga Exercises

A neck tension releaser can boost circulation, release muscle tension, open the shoulders and lift the front of the neck. To do the exercise, tilt the head back and tap lightly with fingers across the front of the neck, gradually moving fingers onto the cheeks, mouth, under eyes and temple. Continue the movements for one minute.

The third eye softener can reduce headaches, relax muscles and soften the vertical lines between eyebrows. The exercise involves pressing one finger into a spot between the eyebrows for one minute.

A Forehead smoother can lift eyebrows, smooth forehead lines, release tension and prevent eyelid droop. To do the exercise, place the first two fingers of both hands on the forehead along the hairline and press firmly into the skin, sliding down towards the eyebrows. At the same time, raise eyebrows and hold for ten seconds, breathing deeply. Complete the facial exercise three times, holding for 20 seconds on the last rep.

The Lower eyelid firmer can strengthen upper and lower eyelids, increase circulation, brighten skin and decrease under-eye puffiness. To do the exercise, place the middle fingers on the inside corners of each eye and the index fingers on the outside corners. Squint and feel the muscles tighten under the fingers. Hold for ten seconds. Focus on squinting the lower eyelids while keeping the upper eyelids open. Complete the exercise ten times, holding the final squint for 20 seconds.
