Indulging in a spa-like ambiance is all about creating the perfect sensory retreat. While visual aesthetics and soothing sounds play their part, one often overlooked element takes center stage: ambient scent. In the ever-rising wave of well-being and wellness trends, research reveals that 75% of our daily emotions are influenced by smell. So why not let scent become the key ingredient in crafting an unforgettable spa experience?
"The right scent equals the perfect feeling," said Sandra Barvaux, Vice President of Fragrance at Prolitec. "Carefully selecting fragrances that create a sense of wellness has the wondrous potential to transform an ordinary space into an alluring spa-like haven that beckons to be embraced."
Barvaux explained that intertwining intelligent design and enchanting fragrances helps spa professionals unlock relaxing and refreshing experiences for spa-goers. Every scent should be meticulously chosen, harmonizing with the desired experience. “Ambient scent companies can help spas select the right scent for their space,” said Barvaux.
According to Spa Vision Director, Susan Auld, “Scents play a pivotal role in relaxing both the mind and body and when diffused into treatment rooms and spa environments it can be a powerful tool to engage the senses and effortlessly enhance the overall experience. Scents can, and should, take you on a journey as you explore and experience all the spa has to offer.”
One spa where we can see scent in action is Massage Heights, where they have teamed up with Prolitec to enhance the spa-like experience for their guests. According to Lexi Althouse, the Director of Recruiting and Team Development at Massage Heights in Indianapolis, scent has greatly contributed to a positive experience for customers. As people enter their retreat, they are greeted with a delightful lemongrass fragrance, which has received numerous compliments.
Exploring the wide world of scents, and the quickly advancing world of diffusion technology, can be quite a daunting quest. Each fragrance holds the key to different emotions and benefits and each technology holds benefits and costs.
“The options for including scent within the wellness space have advanced over the past few years there are more options now,” said Auld. “There is a lot more focus on the 360 experience from the moment you step through the door to the moment you leave, it's not just about the traditional treatments on offer. In all we are a lot more knowledgeable about how the different scents connect with different parts of the body and brain, and how we can use this to enhance the client experience.”
Happily, with the experience of those in the industry and years of scientific studies, there can be some guidance in the wide world of options. Let’s explore four essential ingredients that can create the perfect tranquil atmosphere in any spa sanctuary.

Embrace Tranquility
When it comes to personal wellness, relaxation makes all the difference. By infusing delicate hints of lavender into your spa sanctuary, you can unlock the gateway to relaxation and wave goodbye to anxiety. Auld agrees: “Lavender is a popular choice as it’s calming, releases stress and promotes sleep.” But it’s not just anecdotal experience, studies confirm that lavender not only eases stress, but also alleviates depression and insomnia – a true superhero of scents.
Zest Up Your Experience
If a revitalizing zing is what you're after, turn to the cheerful delight of lemon. Not only does it awaken your senses, but it also has been shown to uplift physical and mental well-being. Lemon's hidden superpower? Boosting GABA production in the amygdala, bringing about a calming effect similar to the famed diazepam. So bid farewell to lethargy and embrace a lemony freshness.
Breathe Deeply
Seeking an invigorating and cleansing twist in your spa or home? Look no further than refreshing eucalyptus. Barvaux finds, “Eucalyptus clears the sinuses and calms the nerves helping clients to feel refreshed.” The wonders of aromatherapy with Eucalyptus essential oil have been proven time and again: studies have found that Eucalyptus oil stimulates our immune systems and provides anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant benefits, which when inhaled in vapor form, help combat respiratory illnesses.
Unwind with Romantic Elegance
For those seeking a touch of softness and dreamy sophistication, rose emerges as perhaps an unexpected scent of choice. “We’ve also found Rose as a popular option, it’s more romantic, releases endorphins whilst also being known for its soothing and healing properties," said Auld. The benefits of rose in a wellness space extend beyond a treatment room and can have long-lasting benefits. Recent studies have linked rose fragrance to better dreams and more restful sleep, even providing these benefits in cases of extreme PTSD.
When it comes to creating a truly immersive spa experience, the power of scent cannot be overstated. Harness the potential of lavender, eucalyptus, lemon, and rose to whisk your guests away on a sensory journey like no other. Remember, the path to relaxation and rejuvenation is as close as a breath of fresh air.
