Thank God Its Natural (tgin) listened to its community and developed the Balance Collection. The collection addresses issues around scalp imbalance with three products, a clarifying shampoo, a scalp exfoliator and a scalp serum. Tgin partnered with a trichologist for the Balance Collection to focus on developing hair care that is backed up with science.
Aris Singleton, CEO of tgin, said she heard from customers that were experiencing scalp irritation, buildup, dryness and flaking. There weren’t a lot of products that were designed to address scalp care, especially in the textured hair category. During a trip to Africa, she purchased scalp care products, used them and loved them. She knew tgin needed to develop scalp care products for its customers.
“We’ve always believed that healthy hair starts with a healthy foundation. The scalp is living skin and if you want stronger, healthier hair, then you have to care for it with the same intention that we care for our strands,” she said.
Singleton said with consumers having more access to more information, there is a more nuanced conversation taking place around the benefits of caring for hair and scalp. She said that in the same way people learned that healthy skin requires consistent care, people are beginning to understand that the scalp deserves the same attention. She equates scalp care to having great skin care as a foundation for makeup.
“I think for years textured hair consumers have known that buildup and inflammation in the scalp impacts hair growth and overall hair wellness,” she said.
Singleton said the skinification of hair care is also changing the conversation around hair care and it is something she heard about during the development of the Balance Collection. She said that it makes sense that tgin is using high performance skin care ingredients in the collection, including lemon oil and niacinamide. She said that tgin has always believed in thoughtful formulations in their products that are backed by quality ingredients. She said the Balance Collection is a natural evolution for the brand.
Singleton said the clarifying shampoo is her favorite as a straight natural with blue hair. She said she needs something that will give her hair the TLC it needs, without stripping the color. She uses the scalp exfoliator every 10 days and said it is gentle but powerful enough to remove the buildup from edge control or glue from wigs and weaves. The scalp serum can be used every day and gives the scalp a reset and refresh. She said the scalp serum is good for women who wear braids or any other kind of natural hair style. Singleton said consumers have asked for more products in the Balance Collection and tgin is in the process of looking at what products would be a great extension of the collection.
Singleton said people who have used the Balance Collection have noticed that their scalp is cleaner. They also love the packaging. She said the goal of the collection was to be intentional, in formulation and a nod towards wellness, while staying true to the values that built tgin.
“I want consumers when they use the Balance Collection and tgin as a whole to enjoy washing their hair and doing their hair,” she said. She added that she wants people who use the products to be confident, feel seen and feel cared for. She described the Balance Collection and the other tgin products as a hug for the hair.
