Shou Sugi Ban House, a destination spa and retreat that marries wellness and healing arts, has opened in New York.

Situated on three acres in the Hamptons two hours outside New York City the retreat features thirteen guest studios and an aesthetic that merges New England charm with Japanese appreciation for nature and minimalism. (Founder Amy Cherry-Abitbol’s parents lived in Japan; she herself lived in Japan, and her two sons were born there.)

The stand-alone spa includes five treatment rooms; a thermal suite with far infrared sauna; Ashiatsu massage rooms; Watsu and plunge pools; a chromotherapy shower that uses colored lights for relaxation and stress relief; a solarium deck; and an indoor/outdoor relaxation lounge.

Among the treatment offerings are the Deeply Relaxing Watsu Water Massage; Micro-Needling Facial by Biologique Recherche; Vibrational Sound Healing treatment; Chakra Balancing Reiki treatment with customized aromatherapy; and Full Body Deep Tissue Massage and Cupping with In Fiore, a natural botanical beauty line from Japan.

Programming focuses on individualized experiences, integrating the physical, mental and spiritual components of well-being. A day might include a morning tea ceremony followed by body alignment and meditation, a guided beach walk and holotropic breathwork, ending with a fire ceremony, seasonal soak and sleep tonic.

Said Cherry-Abitbol: “We’ve created an experience that brings people back to a simple appreciation for their natural surroundings, allows for quiet contemplation and introspection, and fosters meaningful human connection in a tranquil setting.”
