#10Things To Consider For Pregnant Clients

My wife and I are expecting our second child on July 11, 2021. After speaking with Skin Inc.’s Editor in Chief Katie Anderson, we thought it would be the perfect time to write about offering services to our pregnant clients.

1. Consultation card. Ask your clients if they are pregnant, trying to become pregnant or lactating. This will determine whether or not you can use specific ingredients or electric modalities.

2. Set up. Be prepared to raise the bed. You may need to stand up and have pillows to prop up the lower back and legs. It is not recommended for pregnant women to be laying on their back after 20 weeks.

3. Trimester. Have your client check with their health care provider before offering any treatments in the first trimester, especially if they are high risk.

4. Aromatherapy.* Lavender, cardamom, orange oil and sandalwood are just a few of the pregnancy safe oils. Avoid clary sage, rosemary, peppermint, basil and oak moss. Digesting essential oils during pregnancy is not advised. *Clients should consult with their doctor or midwife before using aromatherapy treatments.

5. Retinoids. This great anti-aging and immune building ingredient should be put on hold. Some professionals also advise avoiding the use of vitamin A products while breastfeeding.

6. Acne. Pregnancy can bring some unwanted hormonal acne. Keep the skin calm and avoid irritation. High doses of salicylic acid should be avoided.

7. Melasma. The “mask of pregnancy” is common and can be treated after childbirth and breastfeeding. Using lightening agents like hydroquinone is not recommended.

8. Dry brushing. I’ve had some dry, itchy skin and restless legs with my pregnancy. Dry brushing every night before a shower/bath really helped.

9. Questions to avoid. Was this planned? Have you been trying? Are you excited? Are you having an epidural? Avoid offering unsolicited advice.

10. Questions to ask. Are you comfortable? Any changes to your skin during pregnancy?

What are your skin concerns/goals?

The most important thing to remember when treating a pregnant client is to keep her calm. The “side effects” of pregnancy are temporary and cannot always be explained. They are growing a human, and a new symptom is introduced almost every day. This is such an exciting time. Keep them feeling beautiful inside and out, and you’ll have a client for life.
