There weren’t as many introductions and innovations in 2020 beauty. Of course, this was because we had more important things to worry about. Nevertheless, the year that shall not be named gave rise to some interesting trends that we will see lasting long after the last vaccine is given. Presented here are what I believe the top trends will be in skin care spas.

Watermelon

This melon superstar isn’t considered a superfood, but maybe it should be. Previously known as a summertime treat, watermelon has been popping up in new skin care formulations all year long. We know that watermelon is a great hydrator, but it is also packed full of antioxidants vitamin C and E. The results are smoother and brighter skin, and, frankly, I don’t know many people who are not instantly happier upon tasting, smelling or seeing watermelon.

Prickly Pear Cactus

When you think about a cactus, your mind probably doesn’t go, “Mmmmm, I’d love to rub that on my skin.” But wait, because there are skin benefits to the cactus, moreover with what is inside of it. People have been talking about Opuntia Ficus Indica, or prickly pear cactus, in recent months for the benefits that it holds for skin. The spiny red fruit on the nopal cactus has in it antioxidants, which we know are great at shielding skin from free radicals. In addition, it contains vitamin E to moisturize and vitamin K to calm and soothe. Throw in fatty acids, and you have a pretty well-rounded ingredient, so it’s no wonder it has the skin (and hair) community abuzz.

Scalp Health

We are no stranger to the scalp massage, but this practice has largely been an afterthought—a time-filler if you will while a mask sets or a peel exfoliates the skin. Well, it is not an afterthought any more. Scalp treatments, and even “scalp facials,” have increased in popularity in the last year, in part due to restrictions on facials. Before the pandemic began, Hydrafacial launched its Keravive system for scalp care. There are also a number of products on the market that are designed to exfoliate and stimulate the scalp in this type of facial. You may recall the concept of the meridian massage trending a few years back that presented a pretty amazing scalp massage. More clients have realized the importance of the skin on their head. They have also translated this scalp health to the effects it has on their hair.

Consider adding scalp services or add-ons to your menu, and see clients amazed at the results. Also, be on the lookout for your favorite professional manufacturers to add more scalp care products to their menu.
