Say hello to a totally unique spa experience with Hi, skin, a new franchise that is modernizing the way you look at traditional studio design. The brand has created a highly curated customer service experience that prioritizes tranquility and results. The brand's founder, Mark Elias, sat down with Skin Inc. to discuss how to design a spa space that’s futuristic, yet warm and welcoming.
1. Tell us about the aesthetic of your spa’s interior and the emotion you are looking to evoke from customers?
The overarching concept behind Hi, skin MKT Heights studio was to infuse high-tech elements with a soothing, welcoming environment to offer an advanced, yet comforting skin care experience that defies the typical sterile doctor’s room norm and creates an eccentric environment. This combination sets our studio apart and provides our customers with a unique skin care experience that feels both futuristic and personal.
2. What inspired your design components and process?
The choice of blue as the primary color for Hi, skin is driven by its associations with cleanliness, tranquility and trust. In the realm of skin care, where hygiene and precision are paramount, blue evokes feelings of calmness and relaxation, essential for a spa-like setting, which is why we wanted to implement this within the space. Additionally, blue's connection to technology, through its frequent use in tech company branding, complements the high-tech aspect of the MKT Heights studio design. We chose design elements that feel natural and welcoming, avoiding a sterile look. Incorporating curves softens the environment, making the space feel more organic and less rigid.
Lighting is also pivotal, so we selected blue laser lights that curve vertically, creating tranquil pockets at the treatment stations and breaking away from the traditional boxy approach. These choices help create a warmer, more inviting atmosphere, enhancing the customer experience while maintaining a clean and professional look.

3. What is the most important thing to remember when designing a successful spa space?
It’s important to stick to your brand’s identity and values, and seamlessly integrate those into the design to create a cohesive and personalized experience for your customers to equally reflect the brand identity.
4. Does your spa have any unique features or design aspects?
We incorporated a glossy denim lisso tile that reflects light beautifully, complemented by a deep blue porcelain tile that mimics the unique look of Sodalite, a rare marble from Brazil. Curvature played a key role in the design, from the main entry to the restroom corridor, featuring a series of curves, open shelving, seating arrangements and corridors fully lined with mirrors. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a blue aura created by vertical laser lights, which evokes a sense of intrigue and enhances the immersive experience, perfectly aligning with our brand's signature color, blue.
5. What advice would you give to someone who is designing their spa’s interior?
When designing your spa's interior, focus on creating a tranquil and cohesive environment that stands out from the traditional norms of doctors' offices. Use unique design elements, innovative materials, and distinctive lighting to make your space memorable in a crowded market by not only giving the consumer a great service, but also making it an enjoyable experience within the space from beginning to end.
