Building your business and getting new clients—that’s what it’s all about right? You’ve undoubtedly experienced the difficult, but exhilarating task of drawing in new customers. But once you have them, what are you doing to keep them? It is far too easy to get comfortable and begin to take for granted the very people you worked so hard to get. You are constantly updating your skills, but do you look the part?

In the professional beauty industry, you are only as good as your last client. We expect our clients to be a walking, talking “visual advertisement” for us, but are we holding up our end of the bargain?

We all know the old saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Have you ever really thought about its meaning, especially when it comes to the beauty industry? According to Forbes, “It takes seven seconds to make a first impression. First impressions are more heavily influenced by nonverbal cues than verbal cues. In fact, studies have found that nonverbal cues have over four times the impact on the impression you make than anything you say.”1

Now, are you ready for this? According to Business Insider, career experts say it takes just three seconds for someone to determine whether they like you and want to do business with you. 2

When I say business, it doesn’t matter if you are the President of the United States, the President of the boardroom or the President of the Professional Beauty Association; you get three seconds. And here’s the real “newsflash,” in the professional beauty industry, “Your image is your business!” So, what impression are you making at first glance?
