Waxing is a safe service overall. With high quality products and an educated therapist, clients should feel confident and secure that they are safe. However, waxing does have a long list of contraindications to be aware of.

While speaking with your client during the consultation prior to their waxing service, you will conclude whether it is safe to proceed with their waxing appointment. There will be times when it is safe to move forward and other times when it will be safer not to move forward with the waxing procedure. How do you know when it is safe to move forward or not? How do you know when to wax and when not to wax? If the client has any present contraindications, it is best to reschedule the appointment until it is safe to perform the service.

Contraindications

A contraindication is a condition or circumstance that would make a service inadvisable, or not recommended. Some contraindications are straightforward. For example, you will clearly not wax over stitches. But many times, contraindications fall within a gray area. You will need to use your head and your instinct. If it does not feel right, do not proceed. Aside from your instinct, you must educate yourself to the many contraindications, so you will be prepared and well-versed to protect your client and yourself.

Ingredient Knowledge

Educate yourself by becoming an ingredient expert. The skin care market is evolving and is becoming more and more advanced at a rapid pace. Take some time to study and familiarize yourself with prescription medications and medical skin care lines for acne and skin preservation (anti-aging), even drugstore or department store brands to understand the ingredients and how they affect the skin. The more educated you are, the safer you and your client will be.
