Know When to Toss Your Makeup

Unfortunately, estheticians cannot be with their clients 24/7, but they can help guide them to proper home care for their skin, including when to toss their makeup.

Items in makeup bags can often stick around much longer than what is healthy for the skin. Various cosmetics have their own recommended expiration date from when first opening.

  • Mascara: Four months
  • Foundation: One year
  • Concealer: 12–18 months
  • Powder: 18 months
  • Blush/bronzer: 18 months
  • Cream blush: 12–18 months
  • Eyeshadow: 18 months
  • Eyeliner: 18 months
  • Liquid eyeliner: Six months
  • Lipstick/lipgloss: 18 months
  • Lipliner: One year
  • Nail polish: One year
  • Makeup sponges: Wash after each use, then throw away after a month.

And since 22% of women admit to never cleaning makeup brushes, don't forget to teach clients how vital it is to keep their makeup tools clean, too.
