Q: What reminders should estheticians know when approaching acne treatments for clients?
A: Acne is genetic, environmental and emotional. These clients are loyal and obedient to protocols when they see results. How does an esthetician create an acne-focused practice?

Here are a few steps to consider:
- Training. Not just with a specific product line, but with the histology of the skin and how it develops. Dr Mark Lees, Clearing Concepts; A Guide to Acne Treatments is a great resource.
- Compliance. Know your scope of practice within your state license. Keep accurate records with signed and dated consultation cards. Hygiene is extremely important with these treatments.
- Calm. Treat the inflammation first. Keep the client calm and encourage stress-reducing activities.
- Routine. Home care and regular treatments will maintain results. Pre-book your guests and educate them on the “lifestyle” of clear skin with genetic acne. It’s not “fixed” with one treatment. Be their skin coach!
- Marketing. Use the word “acne” with before and after photos to attract new clients. Good images and “glowing” reviews will drive new client business. When people suffer from acne they research for help.
