Q: What devices do you recommend for estheticians?
Large spas and medical practices usually have the funds to purchase expensive equipment. But, what do you do if you are a single-room esthetician or a smaller spa that wants to offer result-driven treatments, but don’t have the budget? Here are four must-have devices for 2024.
- High frequency. Provides ozone to sensitive skin, reduces inflammation and helps heal acne.
- Woods lamp. Analyzes the skin.
- Handheld devices (e.g. Dermalogica’s Nano Infusion or Bio Therapeutic’s Titian). These handheld devices allow spa professionals to offer microneedling or professional exfoliation without purchasing large dermabrasion machines.
- Microcurrent/galvanic. Penetrate product and prep the skin for treatment.

It’s not common anymore, but the Dr. Lucas Pulverizer is a luxurious way to mist sensitive, dehydrated and aging skin. This is not necessarily a “must-have,” but it is a professional piece of equipment that allows you to enhance your services.
I also must remind everyone about the importance of a good treatment chair or bed and quality sheets. If the client is comfortable and takes a little snooze, they don’t really care what “gadgets” you are using.
Make sure that all of the equipment you purchase has online and in-person training offerings. Be prepared to answer client questions, know contraindications and adjust your menu pricing to reflect your upgraded services.
