Sandra Dubose was diagnosed with alopecia areata, and even though it transformed her into the Bald Beauty Queen of Self Esteem she is today, she wasn't always so confident. In fact, when she was first diagnosed and began losing hair, she was depressed. "For eight years, I hid behind a wig. I couldn't recognize myself anymore." Sandra explained in her discussion on her self-esteem transformation. So she broke down her tips on how she built her own self-esteem up, and how you can use these for yourself or your clients. 

2 Top Tips for Helping Clients

Starting with two key tips that will make a huge difference for helping your clients build their own self-esteem, Dubose asked what concerns clients came into their treatment rooms with. Many said vitiligo, acne, rosacea and eczema, so Dubose discussed how to reach these clients and help them through their difficult time. 

Tip 1: Don't belittle someone else's experience. Everyone's feelings are valid, so avoid saying anything like "it's not that bad." Instead, focus on honoring where your clients are in their self-esteem journey. Acknowledge it and accept it so that you can help them through it. 

Tips 2: Always operate from a space of integrity. Many people will take advantage of someone with low self-esteem. Be sure to keep and maintain your integrity because this will keep and maintain your clients.

5 Tips to Build Your Own Self-Esteem

It's not only important to build your clients self-esteem but to also work on your own mental health. That's why Dubose also gave her general beauty tips for the soul.

Tip 1: Take your power back. The number one step to building your self-esteem is accepting what you cannot change. Don't try and change yourself, but instead change your mind. Re-write what is beautiful and make it your own.

Tip 2: Face your traumas. See where your low self-esteem is stemming from. You are going to have to dig deep into yourself to see why you are not feeling confident in yourself. Dubose explained how you can't search for validation in other people, and even mentioned how counseling or therapy can be a very good option for helping to dive into these internal issues.

Tip 3: Assign value to yourself. Ask yourself what you love about yourself and what you would like to work on. It's important to be able to acknowledge what you love while also being able to know what you would like to work on with yourself. 

Tip 4: Forgive yourself. Dubose explained how women especially have a hard time forgiving themselves, and how it is vital to be able to do so. "Give yourself permission to be human. It's okay to make mistakes. You deserve forgiveness like everyone else," Dubose explains. 

Tip 5: The attitude of gratitude. The unfortunate reality is that life isn't fair. However, having an attitude of gratitude can help remind you that there is always something to be grateful for. Teach yourself to see the glass as still half full.
