Exfoliating and being aggressive with skin that is in the inflammation cascade only further advances the inflammation.

The Inflammatory Process

When your skin experiences inflammation, it sends signals to cells to produce self-destruct enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Your skin is in the inflammation cascade, also called the arachidonic cascade. These are chemicals that break down your protectors—collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. These protectors are in many ways, the fountain of youth, especially hyaluronic acid.

When your body experiences inflammation, the MMPs break down collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. In the case of acne, psoriasis, eczema, sunburn, and other inflammatory skin irregularities, you do not just have the burn, lesions and or eruptions on the outside of skin. The skin also breaks down the protectors inside, making it almost impossible to heal, especially while using harsh exfoliating agents. Extracting and picking will only push the skin to release more self-destruct enzyme MMPs that keep breaking down the skin. Many technicians focus on acne or other types of lesions, failing to realize the skin is in the inflammation cascade because of special chemicals called inflammatory mediators.
