You’ve probably heard the hype surrounding cannabidiol (CBD) as the latest and greatest cure-all for pretty much everything. CBD is being touted as the elixir of life not to mention it’s everywhere and in everything. CBD can be found in a plethora of products ranging from coffee to ice cream, supplements, edibles and skin care products; quite the budding industry, no pun intended. Can you believe that as little as two to three years ago, hardly anyone knew what CBD was? According to a recent poll, approximately 14% of adults, or one in seven Americans, use CBD products.1 The rapidly growing popularity of CBD can be contributed in large part to the passage of the 2018 U.S. Farm Bill, which legalized hemp. That being said, there is still a lot of confusion surrounding CBD. What is it exactly, what are the effects it has on our bodies, will it get you high, is it even legal and should I be adding it to my treatment room? This article will hopefully answer all those questions for spa practitioners. First, let’s cover the ABCs of CBD.

ABCs of CBD

CBD is an active ingredient derived from the cannabis plant. It’s a chemical compound known as a cannabinoid that can be extracted from hemp and marijuana.2 CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the most popular cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant.

CBD does not have an intoxicating effect or make you feel “high” like its cousin THC; however, most people claim it does make them feel something. What that something is exactly; well, that’s different depending on the person.
