Did you know that there was a proper way to shower? Make sure that you, and your clients, are taking showers properly to maintain good skin while maintaining good hygeine.

In a recent article by Insider, dermatologist Heidi Waldorf, M.D., spoke about the most common mistakes clients make in the shower.

1. Over Showering

There is a such thing as over-showering. Taking a shower that is too hot or too long or both can be detrimental to the skin. A hot shower can dry out the skin and cause possible irritation. Hot water is relaxing, but should be used sparingly. Showers shold last no more than 10 minutes.

2. Incorrect Cleansers

Choosing the correct cleansers is just as important as the temperature and length of the shower. Using the wrong cleanser can strip the skin of necessary oils, leaving the skin feeling very tight and dry. This is where you come in. Help clients choose nourishing cleansers.

3. Not Moisturizing

It is important to moisturize soon after the shower, while the skin is still damp, to lock in moisture. Help clients find a moisturizer that has humectants, emollients and an occlusive to lock in moisture, smooth and provide a silky feel.

4. Scrubbing Mistakes

Scrubbing too hard with a loofah, washcloth or other washing method, can cause serious damage to the skin. Also, not properly disposing of, or washing, loofahs and washcloths can cause bacteria to spread on the skin. Bacteria can get into broken skin, from scrubbing too hard for example, and it can cause an infection.

Make sure your clients know how to properly care for their skin during the showering process and after.
