For skin 50 and up, routines require some adapting to treat any aged-related issues.

Mature skin needs a different type of routine, as new skin concerns may appear, such as dry skin and wrinkles.

Yahoo spoke with Anjali Mahto, a consultant dermatologist at Skin 55, to curate the top five changes that clients over 50 should be making in their routines.

1. Hydration

With age, the skin's sebum production decreases, which can lead to much drier skin. Hydration is an important step to add or increase in a routine. This can help to reduce irritation, flaky skin and even help with wrinkles.

Ingredients to look for include hyaluronic acid, ceramides, peptides and glycerine.

2. Retinol

Retinol is becoming more well known, as clients are looking for ways to prevent signs of aging as early as possible. When incorporated into skin care, this ingredient is one of the only proven ingredients that can help diminish the appearance of fine lines, according to Yahoo.

3. Go easy on exfoliation.

Again, more mature skin is more dry, so over exfoliation can really irritate the skin. Plus, after menopause, oestrogen is reduced, causing the skin to take longer to heal, per Mahto.

4. No more foaming cleansers

Foaming cleansers can be more drying on the skin compared to balms, creams or gels, which can have hydrating ingredients.

5. SPF

The key rule: SPF. No matter what age, SPF should be incorporated into daily routines.

In older clients, skin issues such as rosacea, wrinkles and less elastin fibers (loose skin) can be either prevented or helped with the use of SPF.
