With a new year comes a new onslaught of trends. It can be a challenge to pick through what trends will come and go and what will stick, but Rebecca Gadberry, former CEO of YG Laboratories, broke down three big ingredient trends that are going to be present in 2020 at our Face & Body Southeast show on Sunday Feb. 9, 2020.

Trend 1. Clean Beauty

Gadberry started by discussing how clean beauty is going to be the first big ingredient trend of 2020. This will happen both in cosmetics as well as skin care. Gadberry dove into what clean beauty really is by stating what some brands will claim that is not true. She started with stating how clean-beauty products will claim their free of some ingredients that they are not actually clean from because it isn’t possible. For example:

  • Chemicals
  • Toxins
  • Carcinogens
  • Animal-derived

Gadberrry then went into the actual ingredients that clean-beauty products are actually free from.

  • Parabens
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Phthalates
  • Mineral oil
  • Petrolatum
  • Formaldehyde

When it comes to clean beauty there are other ingredients that products will like to leave out includes silicone, but Gadberry stressed the important of what a toxin really is. “The does is what makes an ingredient lethal not the presence.” Gadberry continued by explaining how something only becomes a toxin or toxic after there is a certain amount included in a single product.

Gadberry gave her top tips on what you can do when it comes to this trend stating that spa professionals can become fluent in “clean beauty,” know your products and ingredients and become an influencer.

Trend 2. CBD

This ingredient really became big in 2019, but it is not fizzled out by any means. Gadberry went in to discussing how this ingredient has a legality based on each state though, so it’s important to know and understand what your state legality is when it comes to CBD in products, especially when it comes to selling products.

Gadberry continued to explain how CBD is an amazing ingredient and can help with inflammation, irritation, redness and acne. This ingredient is incredibly soothing.

Trend 3.  Postbiotics

Postbiotics are a non-living microbial cell product purified from the culture supernatant excreted by a probiotic. So, Gadberry broke down what a postbiotic is explaining that it is the not living molecules that come from different probiotics, more specifically she called them “fermented soup.”
