bee propolis

There is no denying that some of the best ingredients come from nature, anything from fruits to vegetables to herbs are all known to benefit the skin. Well it might be time to add bee propolis to the list, according to Shape.

Propolis is a sticky resin the bees gather from trees and other plants. This hydrating ingredient, can be found in serums, creams, gels and even scrubs.

Some benefits of bee propolis include:

  • Blocks the degradation of collagen caused by exposure to UV light

  • Neutralizes oxidative stress

  • Decreases inflammation

  • Antibacterial

  • Antifungal

  • Antiviral

Robyn Gmyrek, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist at Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City, told Shape that propolis can work for most any skin type although an allergic reaction can be a a side effect.

Gmyrek suggests pairing propolis with a retinoid to help decrease the side effects such as dry or irritate skin. It can also be used with a salicylic acid at night to decrease oil production and help keep pores clear.
