#10Things for On-boarding New Staff


Growing your team with new talent can be exciting but also a lot of work. With preparation and a system for new hires, you can make it an enjoyable and successful experience for everyone. Here are #10things for “on-boarding” new team members.

1. Create a Checklist.

It should include employment verification documents, required state and federal disclosures, emergency contact info, company e-mail, alarm code, username/password for the POS, uniform size, bio for website, company policies and any other items you need to sign off on or for future reference. Keep it in their employee file.

2. List Key Questions.

Create a list of key questions for every interview and potential new hire.

3. Prep Team Members.

Have key team members interview the candidate before he/she meets with the owner or manager.

4. Draft a Welcome Letter.

E-mail an official welcome letter with the new hire’s offer letter from the owner and/or manager. Be specific about the position, wage, benefits, start date, arrival time and create excitement.

5. Spread the News.

Communicate with the team who the hires are, when they are starting and what their responsibilities will be within the company. This will elliminate anxiety with current staff.

6. Clear Some Room.

Have a space prepared for them before they arrive. For example, put their name on their lockers or inboxes. Let them know how they store their belongings so they instantly feel like they belong.

7. Establish Training.

A 30-/60-/90-day training plan should be developed within the first week. Schedule appointments for them to meet with necessary co-workers and calendar dates for one-on-ones to review progress.

8. Find a Mentor.

Assign them a mentor and have them shadow their co-worker. This will create teamwork and consistency within the team.

9. Establish Communication.

Show them an organizational chart and explain the lines of communication.

10. Warmly Welcome.

Be ready for them with a welcome gift including name tag, tools needed, e-mail address and a welcome sign.

It always feels good to be welcomed and appreciated. Show great customer service to your team on day one, and they will do the same for your spa customers.
