Consumers Seek Out Pineapples for Their Skin Care

The latest skin care ingredient that is trending in the market is perfect for summer—pineapple. Hold the piña coladas because this ingredient is much better suited in your skin care regimen.

Why Pineapple?

Not only has there been a rise in Google searches looking for "pineapple serum," but a leading UK skin care retailer, Face the Future, has also seen a 76% increase in pineapple skin care of the past year.1

Where is the sudden interest in pineapple coming from though some might wonder. Partially, this could be due to the well known beauty products that have released pineapple skin care products like Glow Recipe, Marc Jacobs and Too Faced, but another strong component is because consumers are seeking out natural ingredients to use on their skin. Thus, many consumers are turning toward fruit enzymes to act as their new exfoliants and pineapple is a great place to start.1

Beauty Benefits of Pineapple

Not only is this a great summer ingredient for fruity drinks and delicious kebabs, but this ingredient also maxes out on actual benefits it can provide to the skin.

As previously mentioned, the enzymes in pineapple are great for sloughing away dead skin. This ingredient is a wonderful natural exfoliant, which is the main reason that consumers are flocking toward it.

Bromelain is an enzyme found in pineapple that not only provides the exfoliating benefits, but also provides anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits to the skin as well. However, esthetician Pam Marshall explained in an interview with Elle that bromelain's molecular weight is too high, making it better as a superficial exfoliant and not a key ingredient for stubborn dark spots or pigmentation.2

Another reason that pineapple is revered for its amazing exfoliating properties is because it combines natural alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). The combination of these natural acids helps to smooth the skin's surface while also providing a glow, which can be very helpful for consumers looking to achieve that "glass skin" appearance.3

While many brands have been using pineapple, or pineapple extract, in their skin care products for a while, now is the time to call it out and draw attention to it. Don't be afraid to pull out the old fineapple pun during this opportunity too.
