Eczema sufferers may be able to treat the condition from the inside out. Research has suggested that probiotics, or “good” bacteria, could effectively treat the condition, creating a bridge between the science and wellness. While results are not yet conclusive, clients looking for a healthier lifestyle may be interested in including probiotics into their diet.
Eczema occurs as an immune system response that causes the condition’s telltale inflamed, compromised skin. Probiotics support a stronger immune—and digestive—system by using “good” bacteria to the gut to help block “bad” bacteria from growing.
While probiotics are available as supplements, such as Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium, they are commonly naturally-occurring in food, such as:
- Yogurt;
- Kombucha;
- Kimchi;
- Apple cider vinegar;
- Dark chocolate;
- Miso;
- Sauerkraut; or
- Raw cheese.
Clients should be encouraged to continue using prescribed treatments for eczema, and to only use probiotics as a complementary method when treating the condition.
