When you think youthful, glowing skin, hydration typically comes to mind. While hyaluronic acid has been the talk of the town for quite some time when it comes to hydration, there may be a new ingredient ready to take the crown—electrolytes. Be prepared to see this ingredient boom in 2020.

Electrolytes and Hydration

When used in skin care, electrolytes can be used as a redistribution system, which helps the entire face receive the hydration it needs.1 Often, this wonderful ingredient has been used in sports drinks, but whether it's being found in skin care or beverages, this ingredient works the same.2 Water follows the flow of electrolytes, so when it's infused in skin care, it allows water to be drawn into the skin.2

Essentially, electrolytes are minerals (i.e. potassium, magnesium and calcium) that conduct electricity when mixed with water. This electricity helps the cells generate energy to regulate water levels in the body.3 While it's often said to drink lots of water for hydrated skin, just drinking water is not enough. Electrolytes help really provide that deep hydration the skin needs.3 It's also important to note that when providing hydration to the skin, electrolytes also help to replenish and strengthen the skin's barrier.4

Breaking Electrolytes Down

In breaking down electrolyte minerals, it's easy to see just how this ingredient works in the skin.

Potassium. Potassium helps to facilitate water pathways within the skin to ensure a balanced hydration, and it reinforces the skin's barrier by organizing the various lipids in the skin.4

Magnesium. Magnesium helps to generate adenosine triphosphate, which cells use as an energy source. Thus, this mineral helps to energize the skin. Apart from piggy backing on improving the skin's hydration, this mineral also enhances the skin's natural shedding process.4

Calcium. Calcium acts as a humectant to draw and hold moisture in the skin, specifically in its uppermost layers. This mineral also plays a critical role in influencing how new cells are formed and how they move from the dermis to the epidermis.4

Electrolytes Coming into Beauty

Electrolytes are most beneficial to dry skin types, as they need more hydration. However, electrolytes can also help other ingredients like vitamins and ceramides perform better in the skin for a healthier complexion. This makes it useful for other skin types beyond dry skin.2

When it comes to electrolytes entering the beauty world be prepared to see them in the form of any products that are designed to add moisture to the skin. This means that moisturizers and hydrating masks will definitely start to see a boost in electrolyte use. However, other beauty products like concealers, setting sprays and primers will start to see an uptick in electrolyte use in the coming year.3

Be prepared to see this ingredient pop up a lot in skin care in the coming year. Make sure your spa is ready for your clients who need an extra hydration boost by including electrolyte products in your back bar and on your retail shelves.
