Hydroquinone: What Not to Do

hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is used as a bleaching agent around the world. It can be a great way to treat hyperpigmentation, especially in people of color and multicultural skin types. But, it can also be a tricky ingredient, with side effects including irritation or darkening of the skin.

Allure spoke with board-certified dermatologists to better understand the best ways for clients to use hydroquinone. This includes:

  • Limiting use to twice a day for six weeks and no more than six months,

  • Avoiding peroxide ingredients when using it,

  • Applying extra sunscreen,

  • Avoiding if pregnant or breast-feeding.
