This course takes students on an in-depth tour of the fundamental principles of pharmacognosy (the knowledge of medicinal plant preparations and extracts) and phytochemistry (literally, ‘plant’ chemistry) as they apply to the clinical practice of botanical medicine. It will examine the major categories and subcategories of herbal constituents in order to provide a reasonable framework for understanding how molecules contribute to an herb’s observable actions.
