According to traditional systems of medicines, all natural phenomena in the universe comes from five elements that together form a comprehensive organizational model.
Five Element Theory looks at the human body as a whole. It’s a philosophy that helps explain how each organ and body system affects, and is affected by other systems through cycles of generation and control in order to bring balance to the body.
The theory describes interactions and relationships between different phenomena, including the natural elements, seasons, organs and emotions. While the theory is primarily applied to medicine, it can also be considered when it comes to promoting lifestyle balance and well-being. Physiologically each element represents various organ systems. Each system carries unique physical, mental and emotional features that form the foundation of various personality and body types.
Wood Element
Associated organs: Liver and gall bladder.
Physique: Individuals with a dominant wood element tend to have a long face, body and fingers, with an athletic build, strong muscles and defined jawline. They tend to have a marching gait.
Character: They are strong-willed, ambitious and proactive. They are natural leaders with energy to burn.
When associated organs are imbalanced: They are prone to stress-related issues including muscle stiffness, headaches, eye problems, menstrual issues and cravings for sour flavors. Emotionally, they can become easily frustrated and angry.
General Lifestyle Recommendations:
- Engage in regular physical activity that promotes flexibility, strength and overall well-being such as yoga, Pilates, swimming and tai chi.
- Eat foods that are supportive to liver health and rich in antioxidants such as sour leafy greens with stalks and bitter vegetables. Avoid alcohol, processed foods, high-fat foods and most dairy.
- Practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation and mindfulness outdoors.
- Focus on detoxifying the liver by staying hydrated and consuming infused teas from: nettle leaf, dandelion root, turmeric, ginger, peppermint leaf, milk thistle seed, burdock root, cardamom seeds, chicory root, lemon, golden seal, astragalus and chamomile at bed time.
- Take of 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 240 ml of water for consecutive days to help detoxify the liver.
Fire Element
Associated organs: Heart and small intestine.
Physique: This body type tends to posses a pointy nose, chin and top of the head. Their shape is like a torch: pointed at the top, narrow at the bottom and flared in the middle. They tend to have a light-footed gait with a hurried pace, and the upper body sways side to side.
Character: They are outgoing, social and charismatic. They are natural entertainers and love to have fun.
When associated organs are imbalanced: They become anxious and restless, suffering from palpitations, insomnia and digestive issues. Emotionally, they may struggle with over-excitement, impatience and a tendency to be overly dramatic.

General Lifestyle Recommendations:
- Engage in regular physical activity that involves social interactions such as group fitness, dance sessions and team sports. Activities that promote cardiovascular health and core strength can be beneficial.
- Focus on emotional well-being. Practice mindfulness and meditation to help manage the fire element’s tendency towards over-excitement or restlessness. Engage in activities that bring joy and emotional balance.
- Practice creative expression through art, music, writing and so on.
- Consume a diet that includes foods rich in antioxidants, healthy fats, whole grains, berries, nuts, oily fish like salmon, cooling foods like cucumber, watermelon, lettuce, hydrating fruits and vegetables, and bitter tasting foods. Choose lean protein sources such as poultry, fish and plant-based options.
- Avoid excessive red meat and hot spices, stimulants and warming foods.
- Practice moderation in all aspects of life.
- Spend time in self-reflection and introspection to maintain inner balance.
- Practice time management to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Earth Element
Associated organs: Stomach and spleen.
Physique: Individuals with a dominant earth element tend to be shorter in stature, with a short torso, fingers and neck. They have a slower metabolism and thicker build.
Character: Nurturing, reliable and practical. They are natural caregivers and love to help others.
When associated organs are imbalanced: They start collecting belly fat. This body type tends to carry weight around the belly, keeping slender arms and legs. They can become worrisome and anxious, and may suffer from digestive issues, fatigue and weight gain. Emotionally, they may struggle with insecurity, overthinking and a tendency to over-analyze.
General Lifestyle Recommendations:
- The earth body naturally stores energy, so engage in consistent physical activities such as swimming, running, cardio workouts, dynamic yoga and aerobics.
- Consume a balanced diet with a variety of nutrient-rich, fiber-rich foods including whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and cooked vegetables. Emphasize eating warm, cooked foods such as vegetables, soups, and stews, which may be gentler on the digestive system. Foods harvested in the late summer and root vegetables grown directly in the ground can bring additional balance to the stomach and spleen. Also include fermented products like yogurt and kimchi to support digestive health.
- Avoid eating cold or raw foods, especially nuts and vegetables, and avoid cold drinks, as these can damage stomach function in the long run. Raw fruits are acceptable, as the essence of fruit is light. Also eliminate sugar and dairy products, as these may generate inflammation in bodies with a low metabolism.
- Pay attention to portion sizes and eat mindfully to prevent over-eating. Eat dinner by 7:00 pm at that latest to give the stomach and other organs a chance to rest.
Metal Element
Associated organs: Lungs and large intestine.
Physique: This body type tends to be a lean, slender build, with taller stature, and distinct facial features such as thin lips and eyelids. They have a swift, light and lively gait.
Character: They are analytical, introspective and thoughtful. They exhibit a disciplined and organized approach to life, and appreciate structure and order. They tend towards perfectionism and striving for excellence.
When associated organs are imbalanced: They can become overly critical and melancholic. They might be more prone to respiratory issues, constipation and skin-related issues.
General Lifestyle Recommendations:
- Exercise regularly and take adequate rest.
- Consume a diet that includes whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat and oats, and lean protein sources like poultry, fish, tofu, legumes and low-fat dairy products. Include sources of healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, seeds, olive oil and fatty fish like salmon, as well as a wide range of fruits and vegetables. Be sure to include pungently flavored foods like garlic, onions, ginger and radishes.
- Moderate sugar intake. Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues.
- Drink plenty of water to support skin hydration and large intestine function.
- Strive to balance work, exercise and relaxation. Avoid excessive rigidity, instead embracing flexibility and spontaneity.
Water Element
Associated organs: Kidney and bladder.
Physique: The water body type is often characterized by a thick jaw and eyelids, with the flesh on the back of the hands being thick. The face is large, fleshy, round, wider at the base than the top, and often features a double chin. The type also has big eyes, thick eyebrows and thick hair, with a full and chubby face and body. Walks slowly, with feet tending to drag.
Character: Introspective, deep thinking and a seeker of wisdom. Exhibits adaptability and resilience.
When associated organs are imbalanced: They tend towards anxiety and fear, with dark rings under the eyes.
General Lifestyle Recommendations:
- Engage in activities that promote physical vitality without over exertion.
- Consume whole foods, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins such as kidney beans and black sesame seeds.
- Avoid raw foods.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
- Establish a regular bedtime and ensure sleep is sufficient.
