CBD is everywhere, being touted as the new miracle ingredient. Prices of these products are high, and the claims are often unsubstantiated. How should an esthetician evaluate if this is a good ingredient to add to your practice or client’s daily care? Let’s take a quick look.

Endocannabinoid System

The system of receptors in the body that is impacted by tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and other cannabinoids is known as the endogenous cannabinoid system or endocannabinoid system (ECS). The effects on the body rely on “turning on or turning off” specific receptors such as CB1, which has been linked to obesity, anxiety, muscle spasticity and chronic pain. The key is to identify which molecules in the cannabis plant will work at activating various receptors. This is ongoing research done primarily outside of the U.S. due to federal drug laws. Currently, some CBD products are claiming benefits such as: pain relief, anxiety reduction, improved sleep, reduction in inflammation and sebaceous gland regulation. It’s important to note that no verified standard dosage has been determined or what the potential interaction with other drugs are.
