By addressing these fundamental physiological processes, patients can greatly improve the quality of their lives and potentially reduce the need for medications or supplements. Recognizing that there is more to the breath than the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, we will review the basic anatomy and physiology of breathing, introduce scientific literature regarding the benefits of various breathing techniques, evaluate the medical/healing benefits of breathwork, introduce methods to examine breath patterns, and learn ways to teach functional breathing. We will discuss how breath retraining can positively affect various conditions, such as HTN, myocardial infarction, asthma, IBS, migraines, and others.
