Tricoci University of Beauty Culture is providing access to careers in the beauty and wellness industry through a partnership with Proviso Township High School (PTHS) District 209.
Juniors and seniors at PTHS District 209 have the opportunity to receive hands-on training in cosmetology and barbering from licensed beauty professionals through this two-year program. Students can earn high school credit while simultaneously fulfilling state licensing requirements. The career pathway will reduce coursework and costs for the students, while creating a faster transition from high school to post secondary education or the beauty and wellness workforce. Upon completion of the program, the students will be able to to continue their education at Tricoci University or pursue other opportunities in the beauty industry.
PTHS Dist. 209 approached Tricoci University of Beauty Culture about a partnership as way to expand access to meaningful career and technical education opportunities that reflect its students’ interests and aspirations. The district recognizes that post secondary success can look differently based on the student and wanted to provide opportunities for a variety of career pathways.
“Our goal is to ensure students graduate with more than just a diploma, but with the skills, experiences, and opportunities to pursue successful careers, whether that’s entering the workforce, continuing their education, or eventually owning their own business,” said Melissa Damewood, Director of Career Technical Education and Early College at PTHS Dist. 209.
PTHS Dist. 209 is covering the cost of the training program for the 27 students who are currently enrolled in it, which removes financial barriers they might have faced. Damewood said that the district wants the students who participate in the program to gain the skills, confidence and professionalism that is necessary for them to pursue licensure and build a successful career. In addition to the 27 students currently enrolled in the program, there are 25 freshmen and sophomores who have expressed interest in participating in the program. Damewood sees that early interest as a reflection of the excitement the students have in pursuing hands-on careers and technical education opportunities.
“At Tricoci University, we are committed to preparing students for successful careers in the beauty industry. Introducing students to the beauty industry early on helps them gain a clearer understanding of potential career paths and make informed decisions about their futures. By combining classroom learning with hands-on instruction from licensed professionals, these programs allow students to develop practical skills, explore their interests, and better understand the opportunities available to them after graduation,” said Larry Foster, Chief Operating Officer at Tricoci University of Beauty Culture.
While this agreement between PTHS Dist. 209 is Tricoci University's first articulation agreement with the district, there is a plan to explore similar partnerships with additional high schools and districts. Tricoci University of Beauty Culture sees it as an opportunity to build on the current model and introduce more students to career-focused beauty education.
“As the beauty and wellness industry continues to evolve, Tricoci University remains focused on preparing students for professional opportunities through career-focused education and hands-on training. This partnership strengthens our connection to the local community and supports our broader commitment to developing the next generation of beauty professionals. While the current agreement focuses specifically on cosmetology and barbering, it reflects our continued investment in career readiness and education within the broader beauty industry,” Foster said.
