On Dec.27, 2016, Comité International d'Esthétique et de Cosmétologie (CIDESCO) will celebrate its 70th anniversary. CIDESCO has been instrumental in educating beauty professionals and therapists worldwide.
Class of ’58
Founded in 1947 by Georges Dumont of Belgium and Jacques Poirsons from France, the goal of CIDESCO was to unite beauty therapists under a common high standard. Additionally, they wanted to provide a forum for professional to network and share ideas.
The first CIDESCO sections were started in Belgium, Austria, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Years later they opened sections in Australia, Latvia, Malaysia and France. Then in 1958, CIDESCO handed out their first Beauty Therapy Diplomas.

Bracing the Big Bold Brow Trend
Then in 1963, CIDESCO appointed Ria de Korte as their first female president and began to change their education to meet the changing demands of the beauty industry. A decade prior, the big bold brow trend was popular and the first modern spas were beginning to crop up. Additionally, new equipment and treatments were being rapidly developed, which increased the pressure for beauty professionals to be well educated.
Looking to the Future
Continuing to grow with the industry, CIDESCO now has 30 sections worldwide, which offers diplomas and post graduate qualifications to millions of eager students.
Commenting on the need for qualified spa professional and the future of the industry, Anna-Cari Gund, president of CIDESCO International, said, “the future is bright, and the demand for well trained staff in the growing wellness industry is enormous. Knowledgeable therapists will increase the status of our profession and ensure that the standard is the highest possible.”
