Outrun the Sun, Inc. sun safety educational programming is supported, in part, by the John Gongos Melanoma Education Fund.
Outrun the Sun, Inc. is an Indianapolis-based nonprofit organization dedicated to building awareness of melanoma and other skin cancers, educating communities about preventive measures that reduce melanoma's incidence rate and raising funds for melanoma research, leading to effective treatments and a cure. It has created partnerships with the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, USA Track & Field and the Road Runners Club of America. OTS also supports melanoma research nationwide.
Girls on the Run is a life-changing, experiential learning program for girls ages eight to 13 years old. The program combines training for a 5k running event with self-esteem enhancing, uplifting workouts. The goals of the program are to develop and improve competence, unleash confidence through accomplishment, develop strength of character, respond to others and oneself with care and compassion, create positive connections with peers and adults, and make a meaningful contribution to community, all while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. Girls on the Run has grown from 3 councils in 1998 to 215 councils covering 47 states and Canada in 2013.
