The Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF) today announced the third annual Miles for Melanoma 5k Run/Walk at Universal Studios, May 4, 2014. The event was co-founded by the MRF, Hillary Fogelson of Pale Girl SPEAKS, and her husband, former Universal Pictures Chairman Adam Fogelson. Pale Girl SPEAKS is a social networking movement dedicated to raising awareness and preventing melanoma. All proceeds from the event go to the largest independent organization devoted to melanoma education and prevention, the MRF. The announcement was made today by the MRF’s Executive Director Tim Turnham.

The past two Miles for Melanoma 5k Run/Walk at Universal Studios were huge successes, with last year’s event selling out and helping to raise more than $350,000 for melanoma research, advocacy and education.

“Melanoma rates are increasing at an alarming rate, especially among women in their 20s. It is the deadliest form of skin cancer, taking someone’s life every hour of every day,” said Turnham. “The third annual Miles for Melanoma 5k at Universal Studios will help the MRF raise critically-needed funding for melanoma research and help increase awareness that melanoma doesn’t discriminate—anyone can be diagnosed with melanoma, no matter their age, sex or race. Together we can make a difference in the fight against this deadly cancer.”

Celebrity friends of the Miles for Melanoma 5k Run/Walk on the Universal Studios Backlots include last year’s co-host Rob Lowe, Molly Simms, Judd Apatow, Sean Astin, Elizabeth Banks, Jason Bateman, Jason Biggs, Soleil Moon Frye, Anne Hathaway, Ashley Hinshaw, Dwayne Johnson, Blake Lively, Jeannie Mai, Kellie Martin, Leslie Mann, Tia Mowry-Hardrict, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Ryan Reynolds, Fred Savage, Jason George, Ryan Seacrest and Jeremy Renner.

This year Amgen, Omid Hamid, MD and The Angeles Clinic Foundation, Rox Cancer Center and Skin & Beauty Center return as event sponsors. The Kissick Family Foundation is a new sponsor for the 2014 event. Skin & Beauty Center will provide event attendees with free onsite skin screenings. Detecting melanoma when it's early enough to treat could mean the difference between life and a life-threatening illness.

Top fundraisers and team builders for this year’s 5k are eligible for a number of fun and exciting prizes, including Panama Jack cruiser bicycles.
