Acne is one of the most difficult and unpleasant skin conditions to manage. It has the effect of lowering one’s self-confidence in many aspects of daily life. When a breakout occurs before a job interview, first date, or, more importantly, those special occasions we want to celebrate and remember through photos, it can be painful and embarrassing. Studying some of the underlying causes of acne and choosing the proper products to control acne helps to bring better results for you and your client.

Biochemically Speaking, Acne is Easy to Understand

Testosterone (an androgen hormone) targets the skin and sebaceous glands where sebum is produced. Testosterone combines with the enzyme 5 alpha-reductase to produce dihydrotestosterone, which stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce increased volumes of sebum. Sebum is expelled out of the follicular tube.

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) and other bacteria on the skin and within the follicles produce bacterial lipases (enzymes) that move into the follicle openings and convert sebum into free fatty acids, which irritates the follicle linings. This irritation causes excessive production of cells and cellular debris, which blocks the follicles and traps P. acnes inside. The P. acnes bacteria inside the blocked follicles breed and produce cystic acne infections, which grow and inflame the skin. Macrophage cells produce inflammatory histamines that cause the skin to become red, puffy and painful. This causes more follicle blockage and promotes more cystic acne infections. In the case of cystic acne, the infections are very deep in the follicles and the acne infections may not rise to the surface where the infection and its waste can be expelled. This causes the healing process with cystic acne to be slow.

BiON’s Effective, Multi-functional and Natural Ingredients

In addition to salicylic acid, BiON uses a specific extract from cinnamon bark that inhibits the action of 5 alpha reductase, including its acne-promoting actions in the sebaceous glands, as well as cyclooxygenase-2 (cox-2), which is a known pro-inflammatory enzyme. We add turmeric and green tea for additional anti-inflammatory benefit and they also block the actions of 5 alpha-reductase, reducing sebum production and eliminating acne infections. This causes the red inflamed look of the skin to resolve quickly, which breaks the inflammation cycle and promotes healing. BiON includes marjoram because it blocks interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and histamine generated by free fatty acids within the follicles. The development of BiON products required a clear understanding of the skin biochemistry involved with acne and the natural plant extracts for a natural acne treatment that has been shown through research to correct this skin chemistry and provide an effective acne treatment.
