It was an honor to judge the 2011 Repêchage Spa de Beauté Award of the Year contest. The Skin Inc. magazine team was extremely impressed with all of this year’s fabulous submissions, and I must congratulate all of the entries on their successes this year, because I know it has not been an easy year for business. It definitely was a very hard decision for us to make.

We looked at specific criteria during the judging process: The spa’s marketing efforts, charitable endeavors and complete menu and treatment offerings; how each spa kept a consistent focus on growth during the poor economy; and finally, spa leadership.

This year’s winner in the Repêchage Spa de Beauté Award of the Year for the Day Spa (Hair & Skin) category, which will be featured as the “Spa Snapshot” profile in the October issue of Skin Inc. magazine, is BeSu Salon & Day Spa in New York City. And this year’s winner in the Skin Care Spa Center category, which will be featured as the “Spa Snapshot” profile in the December issue of Skin Inc. magazine, is Lemongrass Day Spa in Valdosta, Georgia.

“I am very proud of the two Spa de Beauté winners this year,” states Lydia Sarfati, president and CEO of Repêchage. “They are both outstanding business people and were able to build brand- new locations in the midst of this economic crisis. The fact that both of the winners were not only able to survive in such hard economic times, but flourish, really speaks volumes for the level of service they provide.” The Skin Inc. magazine team extends its sincere congratulations to everyone on these hardworking teams, as well.

During the three-day congress that followed, Eric Lewine, vice president of sales and business development for Belvedere USA Corp., talked about branding, and also discussed setting goals. He outlined the importance of having S.M.A.R.T. goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Tangible. This hit home with most of us in attendance because it speaks to how we must move forward in order to keep our businesses thriving.
