Keep Your Spa's Team Strong

Constant learning is one of the most significant concepts for a spa business’s team because there is always more to know. From this fundamental approach, it is important to ensure that your team members are provided every tool available for continued learning so they can pass on their knowledge to their well-informed client base. Consider hosting a continuing education event for your spa’s staff members in order to recharge and build team spirit. Invite compelling guest speakers to teach team members how to better serve the clients and each other, while also participating in fun team-building activities and classes so employees can become familiar with each other to create a better understanding and appreciation for every job within the spa.

It is also important to take care of your workforce in other ways. For example, if your spa is in an urban area, consider inviting staff members to participate in a green transportation program, offering those interested in taking green alternatives to and from the office—such as walking, biking or taking the bus—full coverage of public transportation costs. If yours is a very eco-conscious spa and your staff loves to feel that it is part of a green solution, consider offering recycling options and conserving as a team.

Think about donating to charities and special events in your area. These efforts can help your team feel as if it is part of the community and is involved in giving back. Perhaps your team can raise money on a monthly basis with a jeans day program that allows team members to wear their nicest denim in return for a $5 donation to a charity determined by the team. Your staff can also support causes by participating as a team in events, such as a local breast cancer awareness walks.

Be sure keep it fun. Have a social committee that works to engage staff, and promote positivity and entertainment. Funny hat day, cook for a country, desk bingo and more are just some of the ways to keep things light at the spa. When you work, you work hard, but it’s also important to have a sense of humor.

8 Ways to Thank Your Employees

Thanks to the struggling economy, many small business owners are putting a freeze on raises and bonuses. But according to Ed Hess, entrepreneurial expert, and Charles Goetz, a distinguished lecturer in entrepreneurship at Goizueta Business School, Emory University, that makes it all the more critical to show your appreciation in other ways if you want them to stick around for the long haul. Here are eight ways to show your employees your appreciation.

  1. Say “Thank you.” It’s so simple, it almost seems silly to mention it, but just telling your employees “thank you” when they’ve done a great job will go a long way.
  2. Give them inexpensive bonuses. A few great options include a gift certificate to a local restaurant or tickets to a show or ball game. Alternately, consider giving them a Friday afternoon off with pay.
  3. Provide them with free meals. Provide a catered lunch once a month or doughnuts in the morning. Also don’t forget to take advantage of birthdays and anniversaries.
  4. Award them. Come up with a way to award great work at your business. It is a fun way to show your employees that you value their hard work.
  5. Write them a thank-you note. Let the note be a nice surprise for them by putting it in their mailbox at work or by mailing it to their home. And make it specific: “Thank you for staying late last Thursday to help clean the treatment rooms.”
  6. Help them improve themselves. You can do this by paying for them to attend a class to learn a new technique or service.
  7. Help them get healthy. Providing your employees with a gym membership can have multiple benefits.
  8. Ask them what they’d like to improve about the business. It will make them feel like they have some ownership in your company—plus, it can be hard for an employee to leave when he feels that he has helped build your company into the great business it is.
