#10Things to Maximize Advanced Training Classes

As skin care therapists, we all have a desire to learn and grow. With so much information
out there, here are #10things to consider before signing up for an advanced training class.

  1. Know strengths and weaknesses. Create a needs list for continued education for both yourself and your team. For example, if your clientele is above 35+ years, consider classes with anti-aging-related subjects. Review opportunities for growth and have advanced training fill those gaps.
  2. Budget cost of training. Include the price of the class and loss of revenue for closed appointments. Also, if the training is mandatory for employees, budget the cost of their salary.
  3. Do your research. Find out who is offering the training and their qualifications. Network with other skin therapists and take classes that are based on science, not just on products.
  4. Plan out the logistics. What therapist is attending? Is there traffic or parking? How will the spa’s appointments be covered? If a class is over two hours away, consider getting a hotel room if the budget permits.
  5. Create an ROI for the class. How does this event support the current needs of the spa, and how will it be measured? Challenge yourself with a goal and track the success of the class with real numbers.
  6. Consider sending more than one team member. Most of us learn better in groups. Sending more than one person to training promotes team building and can also better ensure that the information is brought back to the spa. Tip: Some training programs offer discounts on multiple bookings, and if they don’t, it doesn’t hurt to ask!
  7. Discuss expectations with the instructors. Share what you are hoping to learn; the instructor is more likely to cover your information.
  8. Schedule time for a review after the training. Present information to either spa management or in front of the team. If the information is not shared, it will be forgotten.
  9. Think free! Vendors are also willing to offer webinars and online trainings free of charge. (Most product knowledge trainings are complimentary.)
  10. Use technology. We have done our Skin on Market training via Skype. Three team members had a live personalized training without paying any travel costs. It was a win-win for both!
