Destination Spa Group
A self-proclaimed health nut, Michelle Kleist feels as though she was destined to be a part of the spa industry. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and dietetics from the University of Wisconsin–Stout, currently holds a certification in personal training and is a registered dietitian. Kleist’s spa career began at Birdwing Spa in Litchfield, Minnesota, where she worked for four years as the director. Within this position, she taught all fitness classes, facilitated health seminars and discussions, developed cooking classes and several new spa cuisine recipes, created Birdwing’s first Web site, developed the Spa Lifestyle Wellness program and managed the Birdwing staff. Since 2000, Kleist has led the Destination Spa Group as executive director. Working together with several nutrition and wellness experts from destination spas, she helped to create the Components of Spa Lifestyle Cuisine and the Destination Spa Lifestyle Pyramid.
The Lamar Everyday Spa
Heidi Lamar’s business card bears the title “Day Maker” because she says it best describes her daily spa goal. As the ‘Lamar’ behind The Lamar Everyday Spa, one of Arizona’s largest privately owned resort-style day spas, she has a lot of opportunities to fulfill that goal. The 14,000-square-foot spa, which features a steam room, sauna, pool, whirlpool and locker facilities, is staffed by 50 passionate spa team members who greet nearly 15,000 guests each year. In the first three years Lamar owned the spa she tripled its size and revenue, adding a hair salon, dance studio and meeting facilities. Lamar draws on her real estate background for marketing ideas and empowers her spa team to make many of the spa’s product and protocol decisions. Lamar’s management style of “inspiring passionate professionals and then staying out of their way” helped the spa to place #7 on the “Best Places to Work in Phoenix” list in 2007.
