Readers Ask … is a column featuring the responses of industry experts to questions posed by the Skin Inc. audience regarding all aspects of the skin care industry, from business and ingredients to treatment protocol and legislation. Each month, a different question will be highlighted.
What are the hot new ingredients that my clients will be asking about?
Clients are going to ask about sunscreen ingredients and broad-spectrum protection, now that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is overhauling the SPF category this summer. Make sure the sunscreens you carry meet the broad-spectrum requirements. They will protect against the UVB rays that cause burning, the UVA rays that cause premature aging, and they will decrease the risk of skin cancer.

Growth factors—epidermal growth factor, insulin-like growth factor, fibroblast growth factor and transforming growth factor, to name a few—are some of the most sought after ingredients in skin care today due to their repairing action that erases the years, giving the skin a more youthful, refreshed look. Also, tetrapeptide 26 optimizesclock genes, which become de-synchronized over time, dramatically increasing the skin’s aging process. By re-synchronizing clock genes, which are responsible for turning on the repair cycle at night and protecting the skin during the day, the signs of aging are minimized.
