Researchers Tie Healthy Diet to Fewer Wrinkles

We all know that diet can impact the quality and appearance of skin, but what about facial wrinkles. A group of Dutch researchers aimed to investigate just that, investigating the correlation between a healthy diet and facial wrinkles.

The Study

This group used a population-based cohort of 2,753 elderly, Dutch participants, and the findings were published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology.

The group started by digitally quantifying wrinkles into a percentage of the total skin area they covered on the face through facial photographs. They then assessed all of the participants diets through a questionnaire.

Each diet was calculated in adherence to the Dutch Healthy Diet Index (DHDI), and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to decipher relevant food patterns in men and women separately. Finally, the researchers used multvariable linear regression to analyze the results.

The Conclusion

Upon analyzing the results, the researchers discovered that women who followed the DHDI showed fewer wrinkles than those who did not. However, this correlation was not similarly found among men.

Women who had a red meat and snack-filled diet were associated with more facial wrinkles, while those with a fruit dominant diet were not. Thus, they concluded that dietary habits did associate with facial wrinkling, but due to the cross-sectional design of the study, causation could not be proved.
