Bellus Academy presented the Beauty Changes Lives gala celebration of fashion, beauty and wellness during San Diego Women’s Week in March. Attendees enjoyed inspirational stories from beauty industry icons, such as Jan Arnold, founder of CND, and Tracey Sameyah, president of Murad Inclusive Health Spas. Created by the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS), Beauty Changes Lives is an initiative that seeks to build awareness of careers in beauty and wellness, raise funds for scholarships and contribute to philanthropic causes supporting the beauty and wellness industry. 800-831-1086

The Beauty Boutique in Burbank, CA, started offering a Charity Candy Bar, allowing the business to advocate a different charity every other month, the first of which was Autism Speaks. Along with these proceeds and a portion of services and tips, the facility’s team also raised donations for a local walk benefiting Autism Speaks. In April, Repêchage CEO and founder Lydia Sarfati teamed up with Lois Christie, owner of Christie & Co. Salon in Bayside, NY, to honor Go Red for Women from The American Heart Association (AHA). Sarfati gave healthy skin care tips and performed a skin care makeover for a lucky client. Christie offered hair color makeovers and Diana Sixsmith, MD, chairman of the department of emergency medicine of New York Hospital Queens and former president of the AHA New York City affiliate provided healthy heart tips. 800-248-7546

Body Bliss created a healing aromatic blend called I ♥ Japan to show kinship with and provide financial support for the Japanese people in the wake of the recent catastrophic natural disaster. Each oil in the blend was selected for the vibrational messages and healing properties it carries, and was combined to create a collage of scents expressing solidarity, caring and comfort. Kicking off the second year of its SOS—Save Our Skin campaign, La Roche-Posay distributed more than 8,000 kits to dermatologists containing all the tools needed to educate clients about proper skin checks. Also, the iPhone application “My UV Check” provides an index for the day’s UVA and UVB exposure in the user’s location. Other initiatives include skin checks at two New York Yankees baseball games, as well as free skin checks for L’Oreal corporate employees.
