Readers Ask ... Nutrition and Skin Care
Posted: February 28, 2012, from the March 2012 issue of Skin Inc. magazine.
Readers Ask… is a column featuring the responses of industry experts to questions posed by the Skin Inc. audience regarding all aspects of the skin care industry, from business and ingredients to treatment protocol and legislation. Each month, a different question will be highlighted.
This month's question: What is the relationship between nutrition and skin care.
Although external skin care is essential for clear, smooth, healthy skin, the skin care professional must consider a holistic approach to skin care. Nutrition is inextricably linked to the skin for nourishment, renewal and the repair of skin cells.
—Pat Lam, President, Skin Care Consultants
Only 20% of the skin (the epidermis) can be reached by topical products. The rest is strengthened through healthy nutrition; in fact, studies have demonstrated that eating pomegranates can even increase the SPF of sunscreens! Providing your body with the right raw materials, such as raw fruits and vegetables, allows it to maintain a healthy water balance, stimulate new cell growth, and repair vital structures—including replenishing your skin. Healthy skin is a reflection of overall wellness.
