Skin Gym: 3 Steps for Effective Peels

“When you want to run a marathon, you don’t just jump on a treadmill and run 26 miles. You have to train. This is the same with your skin,” explained Jacquelyn Hill, director of education for Image Skincare, at IECSC Chicago 2017.

During her presentation, she presented three simple steps for effective peels. Just as a coach trains a runner, an esthetician trains a client in skin fitness. She suggested the following three steps.

  1. Warm-up. Before starting any workout, you have to warm-up. For a treatment, an esthetician does this by having a conversation with their client. Learn what their skin care concerns and needs are. Make sure you are aware of any products that they use and any sensitivities.
  2. Workout. After the warm-up, it is time for the workout, the peel. If this is a first-time client, stay away from doing any advanced treatments. An enzyme peel is probably a good place to start. For clients that you have seen for a while and are looking for a little more, you might want to suggest a chemical peel.
  3. Cooldown. Just as every workout starts with a warm-up, every workout should end with a cooldown. Many clients skip this part of their skin care workout. However, for them to receive the maximum benefit of their treatment, it is important that they have aftercare guidelines. One possible solution is including an aftercare kit in the price of the treatment. This way, they don’t feel like they are paying for something extra.
