Research by Technavio reported that the U.S. spa market will grow in the next four years, largely driven by more services being offered and an increased interest in wellness.

The report ‘Spa Market in the US 2016-2020’ shows an in-depth analysis of the market in terms of revenue and emerging trends. The market is expected to reach more than $24.73 billion dollars by 2020.

The report digs into a few different segments to calculate the market size, including: day and club spas, hotel and resort spas, medical spas, destination spas and mineral and thermal spas. The revenue generated from each spa is then calculated to see the final market size.

The report found that one of the biggest growth factors are the larger amounts of services offered to differentiate from their competitors. The trend of wellness and healthy lifestyles, the growing number of working women and popularity of massages are also factors that play into the growth.

The trend of wellness is a trend among U.S. consumers that has become popular in the past couple of years with no signs of slowing. Being inclined to a healthier lifestyle is giving consumers more opportunities to attend spas. Special services offered lately aid in this trend. Treatments that maintain physical and mental wellbeing are important with programs such as, weight management and nutrition consulting. Anti-aging treatments and relaxation programs assist in this trend, also.

As women are the prime clients for spas, the growing number of working women helps add more consumers to the market because their spending power is increased. In 2013, only 40% of households reported that mothers were the main source of income with children 18 or younger. In the U.S., about 75% of spa clients are women and the rise of working women will further expand the market to increase the number of spa visitors over the next five years.

Massages are still one of the most requested spa services by clients during their visit. According to a 2015 survey by the American Massage Therapy Association, 18% of American adults received at least one massage from July 2014 to July 2015. Relaxation and stress reduction are considered to be the primary reasons for opting for a massage. Pain relief and medical reasons are also major reasons for these visits.
