The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) has released the 2008 National Profile of the Salon Industry, which takes a look at the size and scope of the U.S. beauty industry, and includes spas, salons, nail salons and barber shops. Highlights from the study include:

  • There are more than 825,600 salon industry establishments in the United States, and spas and beauty salons make up the larges portions of the industry, representing 69% of all establishments.
  • Thirty-two percent of all individuals in personal-appearance occupations are self-employed.
  • Fifty-four percent of spa and salon establishments with payroll employees have fewer than five employees, while 80% have fewer than 10 employees.

The report is free for PBA members and $149 for nonmembers. To access the report, log on to www.probeauty.org/businesstools/resources.
