Q. Although I’m a new esthetician, I’m feeling bored. How can I make the job feel fresh again?

A. With a majority of our workday being spent in a small, dark room, it is understandable that an esthetician will go through periods of feeling bored and stagnant.

Here are few tips to reignite the passion you once felt toward this amazingly abundant industry.

1. Challenge yourself. We all have areas of genius work, which is where we feel confident and comfortable. However, just staying in our comfort zone can create feelings of wanting more.

Focus on a new aspect of the job…one where you feel you need improvement. Pick one area of your daily routine that makes you feel nervous or uncomfortable and then commit to raising your standards in this area.

2. Do more of whatever feeds your skin care soul. Be sure the advanced courses you are taking are related to a topic that you feel passionate about. Often, we will invest in a class that is convenient and affordable, and this approach is not always fulfilling. Find a training course that is in line with what exhilarates you.

3. Attend a tradeshow (like Face & Body pictured above). This is a fantastic way to learn about exciting new trends in our beauty biz world.

4. Get a part-time job in another area of the beauty biz world. There are so many different opportunities in the beauty industry, so why not get a part-time job that gets you out of the treatment room. Some examples could be: sales rep for a skin care line, advisor at Sephora or a makeup counter or a trade show booth assistant.

Most importantly, know that when the feeling of boredom enters your world, it is a sure sign that it is time for you to grow and expand.
