"I’m going to share with you some of the procedures that are done in medical offices and medical spas. We’re going to talk a little bit about hair removal and lasers, chemodenervation through the use of botchulinum toxin, then we’ll move into the use of fillers and facial rejuvenation. The procedure you may be most familiar with, that is most commonly performed in medical spas, is chemical peels, and we’ll touch on that as well. So by the end of this session, what I hope you’ll have an understanding of is the various procedures that can be performed on the aging face and the aging skin to improve appearance.

Let’s begin our discussion by talking a little bit about laser hair removal. Laser hair removal has been introduced into the medical spa because it’s a very safe procedure and obviates the need for shaving. There are both professional and home laser removal devices. Laser hair removal was developed after phototricholysis or photoepilation became understood. It was first developed in the mid-1970s but was only recently launched in the home market.

Basically, laser hair removal works on the principle of selective photothermolysis, photo meaning light, thermo meaning temperature and lysis meaning breaking open. What you’re doing is using light to generate heat to damage the hair follicle itself.

The definition of permanent hair removal, as approved by the FDA is a “stable decrease in the number of terminal hairs for a period longer than one complete hair cycle at a given site.” Terminal hairs are the thick hairs that grow out of the body. They are not the fine peach fuzzy hairs that we call vellus hairs that are most common on the female face.

Notice here the key phrase, “one complete hair cycle at a given site.” This means that the hair basically doesn’t grow for a given period of time, but most of your clients would not consider hair not growing for a given period of time to be permanent hair removal. When your client comes in, they’re going to want that hair to never regrow ever again."
